Nuance Winterguard

About Us

JMU Nuance is comprised of two units competing in the Independent A & Independent Open classes.

The teams compete in the Winterguard International (WGI) and Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) circuits.

JMU Nuance is a 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2018 WGI World Championship IA Finalist, a 2010, 2013, and 2015 WGI World Championship IA Semi-Finalist, the 2018 WGI World Championships Independent A Class Bronze Medalists, and were promoted to the Independent Open Class in 2019. JMU Nuance Open is a 2019 & 2021 Open Class Finalist, a 2020 WGI Virtual Finalist, and a 2022, 2023, & 2024 Open Class Semi-Finalist. In 2025, Nuance Open was a WGI World Championships Open Class Finalist, concluding their season in 5th place.

JMU Nuance A was promoted to Independent A during the 2017 season and competed in their first WGI regional in 2018 where they were a Regional Finalist. JMU Nuance A competed in WGI World Championships in 2019 and 2021, and were 2023, 2024, & 2025 A Class Semi-Finalists.

In the 2021 season, JMU Nuance premiered our first ever Showcase team that participated in the e-Showcase classification and was broadcast on Flo-Marching.
